SCAN - Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Clinic

Provides enhanced health assessments for children in non-emergent cases of suspected child abuse and neglect.
The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Clinic is a regional, community-based, multidisciplinary program administered by Interior Health, providing enhanced health assessment for children in nonemergent cases of suspected child abuse and neglect. The clinic also provides consultation and training for other community and regional professionals working in the area of child protection and child maltreatment. The clinic provides a confidential, nonthreatening, child-centered environment for children and families. Time is taken to prepare each child for the medical exam and clinic assessment process.
Service is offered to all children and communities within the Interior Health geographical region.

  • Medical/ Legal Assessments
  • Crisis Counselling Referrals
  • Professional Consultation / Education

Referrals and Eligibility
Any child under the age of 19 years who is suspected of being the victim of non-acute (over 72 hours) child physical, sexual, and emotional abuse or neglect is eligible for referral. Referrals are received by phone, fax, or in person. Referral Sources include:
  • MCFD/Child protection social workers
  • Delegated Aboriginal Agencies/social workers
  • All physicians/nurse practitioners, e.g., emergency or private practice
  • All RCMP members
