Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) - Kelowna

Provided by Interior Health

For patients with injuries and illnesses that should be addressed by a health care provider within 12 to 24 hours, but do not require the level of service or expertise found in an emergency department.
Care will be provided by a team of healthcare providers that includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists and medical office assistants. Patients will be able to see health-care providers other than a physician if their medical needs are more suited to another member of the team.

The UPCC will provide care for people without a family doctor or nurse practitioner and people who are not able to access their family doctor in a timely way. Patients without a primary care provider will be followed by the UPCC for their primary care needs and be supported to attach to a permanent doctor or nurse practitioner. The Kelowna UPCC will ensure follow up for patients back to their own family doctor or nurse practitioner. Unattached Patients can call the UPCC directly to speak with an RN, or access the clinic as a drop in appointment. The process for an individual that has a Family Physician is:
  • FP assesses patient using telephone/virtual care platform.
  • If FP decides patient requires physical assessment (chest auscultation and O2 sat), MOA calls UPCC and books appointment at UPCC.
  • FP sends referral form to UPCC.
  • MOA lets patient know time of appointment at UPCC
  • Patient attends UPCC
  • Patient receives a physical assessment by FP/NP at UPCC
  • Patient may receive COVID-19 testing based on the physical assessment and the current swabbing criteria. a) Patient is assessed and sent home to self-isolate, given patient handout. Encounter note sent to FP. Patient will follow up with FP OR b) Patient is assessed and requires further assessment and intervention at ED. UPCC arranges ED transfer.
